The tour begins at Fort Canning Green, near Carpark A. Make your way there when you are ready to start. Steeped in history, Fort Canning Hill was once known as "Forbidden Hill". This is because Malays in the 19th century understood that it was the seat of royalty for rulers of Temasek (or "Sea Town", an old name for Singapore) in the 1300s. Later, Singapore's colonial leaders made their residences there, and the hill became a military base during the Second World War. More recently still, ancient relics dating back to the 14th century have been unearthed.

Our first story takes us to the old Fort Canning Cemetery, next to the Gothic Gate. Find the spot - which is just next to Carpark A - to begin your tour.

For the next story, make your way to the Keramat Sultan Iskandar Shah. To find it, either cross over at the top of Fort Canning Green to the other side, where the shrine is located amongst the trees beyond. Or cross the lower part of Fort Canning Green through the opposite gate, then walk up through the Spice Garden.There is a short climb in this section (5 mins) which is the most strenuous part of this tour.Through the years the structure over this shrine, and its surroundings, have been renewed many times - but its spiritual significance has never diminished since Bukit Larangan became accessible to the public. The path leading to Keramat Sultan Iskandar Shah is lined with herbs and spices. Some visitors say their fragrance makes them feel a certain presence at this holy place.

For the next story, find your way to the 'Sally Port'. For this, go up the path or stairs then double back along the roadway next to Fort Canning Centre. A short distance past the main buildings is the next sighting location.The land within Fort Canning Park has witnessed many of Singapore’s historical milestones. The hill was once the site of the palaces of 14th century kings, and served as the Headquarters of the Far East Command Centre and British Army Barracks. The decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 was also made on the hill, in the Underground Far East Command Centre, commonly known as the Battlebox.

For the next story, head to the top of the Fort Canning ‘Battlebox’. To get there, if you are feeling brave, and the gate is open, you can do this by going up the Sally Port stair tunnel. Alternatively, open stairs and a lift are available back towards the Fort Canning Centre.The image shows the old Fort Gate, close to where Ian had his encounter above the Battlebox bunker.The Fort Canning Bunker, having remained empty and unused since the war, was sealed off in the late 1960s due to safety concerns and its exact location forgotten. It was brought back into the public eye when it was "rediscovered" by a journalist in 1988, who was following a number of leads claiming the existence of an underground bunker complex on Fort Canning Hill.

For our final stop make your way down the hillside beyond the Fort Gate, the other side of the hill from where you started. Take the path to the left of the Fort Gate structure, and you will come to a covered staircase. This takes you down to another memorable location: Pancur Larangan, the ‘Forbidden Spring’. This garden features a sculptural wall handcrafted in natural volcanic rock which details life in Fort Canning Park from the 14th century to the 19th century, as well as the socio-cultural influence of water in different eras.
