Introduction to the Tour

We’ll begin this tour by thinking about a central aspect of the human condition: how humans orient themselves in a world that sustains life but is never fully under our human control.Before we even get to questions of human civilization and the likes of social and political structures, there is a more fundamental challenge: learning how to live within natural systems that shape us, whether we notice them or not.

Welcome to the Lobby Level

Enter the Museum and walk through the glass doors. Through there, turn right and walk past the Bronze Room. Find the Pitcher (Gui) at the far end of the display.

Directions to the first object.

Pitcher (Gui), Grey Earthenware, BCE, Neolithic, Late, Dawenkou Culture; Ceramic, 31 x 14cm.

The pitcher is a functional vessel, made to hold and pour water. Its form is shaped by use: the size of the opening, the thickness of the ceramic walls, the balance required to lift and tilt it. This is not an object made for display, but for repeated handling.

Turn left from the Grey Earthenware, walk down, and turn left once again. We'll be looking at two ink paintings on this wall.

The human condition question this raises is not whether humans belong in nature, but how. What does it mean to stand before something larger than oneself without trying to master it, and without necessarily being erased by it?

On this level, we’ve been looking at how humans orient themselves within the world; through dependence on natural resources, through attention to scale, and through early forms of settlement and civilisation.Take the lift to the Concourse (C) level.

Conclusion to the Lobby Level

This section explores a familiar human-condition concern: the tension between the shortness of individual lives and the desire to make aspects of them endure.

These portraits present individuals as they were represented within the visual conventions of their time. Clothing, posture, and medium all shape what we see, and just as importantly, what we do not.The works here invite us to ask: when an image survives longer than a life, what kind of truth does it preserve, and what does it inevitably miss?&nbsp;

The Portrait Wall

Make your way behind the Portrait Wall. Turn right and look for the large painting of the Samsui Women.

The human-condition question we might ask here is: whose work makes the world possible, and whose lives are likely to be forgotten once that work is done?

Debbie Ding,&nbsp; The Library of Pulau Saigon, 2015;&nbsp; PLA Print,&nbsp; Variable dimensions

The Library of Pulau Saigon does not try to restore what has been lost. Instead, it asks us to notice what survives albeit unevenly, and to acknowledge what cannot be recovered. The human question here is quiet but persistent: How do we remember responsibly when what has been lost cannot be fully recovered? And what does it mean to recognise loss without trying to smooth it over with a finished narrative?

The Library of Pulau Saigon

On this level we explored how humans respond to the fact that lives, labour, and places do not last. We looked at portraits, photographs, and archives as attempts to preserve what would otherwise fade, and at how these acts of preservation are always selective, often shaped by who records, what is valued, and what is left out. Take the lift to the Top (T) level.

Conclusion to the Concourse Level

This level explores another central feature of the human condition: how humans create systems to organise life, while knowing that those systems are never complete or fully stable.

Yunizar, Untitled, 2007; Acrylic on Canvas, 200 x&nbsp;300&nbsp;cm.&nbsp;

At first glance, this painting can feel a little visually crowded. You’ll notice that thick strokes overlap in different directions, with no clear centre and no obvious figure to settle on. Black, beige, and red compete across the surface, resisting any point of focus.

Turn right from the Yunizar piece, towards the lift once again.

Ng Eng Teng Where Have All the Flowers&nbsp;Gone?,&nbsp;1991; Ciment fondu,&nbsp;copper&nbsp;wire,&nbsp;silk&nbsp;fabric, 133 x 45 x&nbsp;45 cm. Gift of&nbsp;Ng&nbsp;Eng Teng.

Ng Eng Teng often explored vulnerability and deterioration in his work. In this piece, he shows how order and disorder coexist within the same form. The sculpture doesn’t dramatise collapse, nor does it present disorder as a problem to be solved. Instead, it draws attention to how irregularity can emerge even when a structure initially appears stable.

Turn left into the Unfettered Brush gallery and walk towards the 1+1=1 exhibition nested further within. The artwork is located right behind the introduction wall.

Ng Eng Teng,&nbsp; The Last Masterpiece,&nbsp;undated; Cotton swabs, syringe, plastic tubes, 113.5 x&nbsp;88 cm.The Last Masterpiece is not about transcendence in an abstract sense. It is about continuity: how human agency can be carried forward through others, through instructions, and through shared practices with art providing a medium through which intention can persist beyond the artist’s own physical presence.

As we come to the end of this tour, the questions we began with remain open. The works you’ve encountered do not offer answers or resolutions. Instead, they show different ways humans have responded to change, uncertainty, fragility, and constraint, through making, organising, remembering, and interpreting the world around them. What stays with you; what resonates, unsettles, or prompts further thought, is part of how these works continue to matter beyond the museum space.
