Welcome To Werribee Open Range Zoo 

<p>Welcome to the Australian Trail—a journey through some of the most iconic, resilient, and extraordinary animals found across this vast continent.</p><p>As you step forward, you’re walking into the landscapes that shaped creatures like kangaroos, koalas, emus, and critically endangered species you may never have heard of—but will never forget.</p><p>This trail isn’t just about seeing animals. It’s about understanding them. The land, the climate, and thousands of years of co-existence with First Nations peoples have shaped the behaviors and adaptations you’ll witness here today.</p><h1>When your ready, Head through the gates in front of you and on to our Australian Trail.</h1>

Australian Trail Entrance

<p>Welcome to the native grasslands.</p><p>This landscape is part of the traditional lands of the Bunurong and Wathaurong peoples.</p><p>The trail is lined with River Red Gums, wattles, and native grasses such as kangaroo grass—important to both ecology and First Nations food practices.</p><p>Keep an ear out for bush birdsong, and watch for wild skinks sunning on warm rocks.</p><h1>Continue along our trail to your right and on to your first animal stop just ahead. Our Tammar Wallaby.</h1>

Australian Native Grasslands

<p>These shy, compact wallabies once vanished from the mainland. Thanks to breeding programs, they’ve bounced back.</p><p>Watch for them nibbling in shaded clearings. Tammar means “pouch” in a local First Nations dialect.</p><h1>➡️ Follow the path through our wallaby friends towards the next grassland dwellers. Our Kangaroos.</h1>

<p>Eastern Grey Kangaroos often move in mobs. Males can stand over 6 ft tall and use powerful tails for balance and combat.</p><p>They’re crepuscular "crep-usk-ular"— meaning most active at dawn and dusk.</p><p>Look for joeys poking out of pouches!</p><h1>➡️ Follow the path to your right toward our emu zone and come meet some of Australias funniest birds.</h1><h3>You may be able to spot our Emus hanging out near the Kangaroos. Continue to your right and watch out for anything that looks Historic.</h3>

<p>You’re now standing near the historic Chirnside Woolshed, built in the 1860s as part of one of Victoria’s largest sheep stations. </p><p>It’s a rare glimpse into colonial life and agriculture. While the animals here today represent wild Australia, this structure reminds us of the transformation of this landscape from grazing land to conservation sanctuary.</p>

<p>You’re now standing near the historic Chirnside Woolshed, built in the 1860s as part of one of Victoria’s largest sheep stations.</p><p>It’s a rare glimpse into colonial life and agriculture. While the animals here today represent wild Australia, this structure reminds us of the transformation of this landscape from grazing land to conservation sanctuary.</p>

In emu families, males do the parenting—incubating eggs and raising chicks.</p><p>Emus have appeared in Wathaurong Dreaming stories as messengers and shape-shifters.</p><h1>➡️ Walk along the curved path toward our parrot aviary. Its the large grey building over to your right. Its time to meet one of Australias rarest birds.</h1>

Emus

<p>One of Australia's most endangered birds—fewer than 100 remain in the wild.</p><p>These vibrant green-and-orange parrots migrate between Tasmania and the mainland.</p><p>Werribee Zoo helps reintroduce captive-bred individuals each spring.</p><h1>➡️ Lets head on through our aviary to our next tree loving friends. The Koala. Exit the aviary and head straight down the path towards our Koala lookout zone.</h1>

Orange-bellied Parrot Aviary

<p>Koalas rest up to 20 hours a day in River Red Gums and Manna Gums.</p><p>They’re not bears... just tree-loving marsupials with a specialized diet.</p><p>Males bellow to communicate, and koalas have fingerprints almost identical to humans!</p><h1>➡️ Continue along the path towards the gate on your left to continue our journey together.</h1>
